Wanna be a Multimedia Professional? Start in the Bronx!

It’s been over 20 years, since I graduated from NYU with my Bachelors in Journalism & Political Science.  But if I had to do it all over again today, I’d want to go study in the Bronx.  What’s up there you ask?  A brand new $16-million dollar multimedia communications center that’s home to the Journalism, Communication & Theater Department of Lehman College (part of the City University of New York system).

I don’t know of any college or university that has a set-up quite like this one.  Don’t get me wrong — NYU, Columbia, Fordham, Quinnipiac, and Hofstra have solid journalism and multimedia programs — but if you’re looking for a public college with a great program offering students access to the new tools of the trade along with a distinguished roster of professors, then you need to look at Lehman College.

On Thursday night, I had the pleasure of visiting the Lehman Multimedia Center for the Unity2012 reception.  The bi-level, 22,000 square foot multimedia center is housed within the historic Carman Hall and features a state of the art, high-definition television studio; a fully equipped HD control room; a post-production digital audio suite; a fly-pack (a portable digital control room for remote broadcasts); a digital multimedia newsroom, several non-linear editing suite; and a studio/edit suite for music scoring, along with fully equipped conference & classrooms.  As someone who has been involved in the design and build out of several studios and control rooms for radio and television stations, along with houses of worship, I can attest this facility is truly top notch!

Besides having all the “toys” — I meant “tools” of the trade — there’s a solid multimedia curriculum focusing on print, broadcast, online, multilingual journalism, TV production, film production, and public relations.   I also had the honor of meeting a number of bright and very promising students from the program.  The Lehman students write and produce an online newspaper: The Bronx Journal.  They also originate programming that airs on CUNY TV and BronxNet cable channels, YouTube, and they even have a new online radio station.

Professors Miguel Pérez & Tom O'Hanlon

The professors at Lehman are also veteran communicators, journalists, artists, and musicians.  Among them: Prof. Tom O’Hanlon, a former colleague of mine at NBC (you can also hear him these days on WCBS Newsradio 880) and Department Chair Prof. Miguel Pérez, a veteran print journalist and columnist; he also works in radio and television as a commentator and political analyst.

So, my advice to anyone even thinking about a career in media – Lehman College is a great place to get started and I highly recommend their Multimedia program!
